PATIENT: "He's tall. Handsome, funny, and will take care of me for ever."
THERAPIST: "How tall?"
PATIENT: "6-2 at the minimum."
THERAPIST: "What's handsome & funny?"
PATIENT: "Chisel chest & abs. Square jaw. Broad shoulders. Determined. And he makes me laugh."
THERAPIST: "How will he take care of you?"
PATIENT: "He makes 6 figures. That'll cover it. He buys the things I want."
THERAPIST: "All these things that you mention about him.... Those are traits & things that he brings to the table. Right?"
PATIENT: "Yeah."
THERAPIST: "So what do you bring?"
PATIENT: "Me. What else? That's all he should need. I'm offended that anyone would even ask that."
THERAPIST: "What if someone came to the table and told you what you just told me?"
PATIENT: "That's not my prince charming."
THERAPIST: "You realize that in the modern social climate, women are not property anymore. You can vote since 1920, follow any career path you want, any college major, or even opt for a traditional....."
PATIENT - interrupting: "That's not what my prince charming is all about. Although I might get what I settle for."
THERAPIST: "You realize only 4% of the human race is over 6-2, and less than 8% of the male population makes 6 figures. Are those some of your expectations?"
PATIENT: "I refuse to compromise. I shouldn't have to."
THERAPIST: "Did it ever occur to you that your expectations are high? Of course you will have to compromise."
PATIENT: "That's not what my prince charming is. I refuse to compromise. I shouldn't have to."
THERAPIST: "I understand. Ok, where did you get your ideas about what a prince charming is?"
PATIENT: "Everybody knows that. That's the way we're raised to believe it. It's all over TV. The Movies. Social Media. It's everywhere."
THERAPIST: "Describe the last guy you were really attracted to? I mean really attracted to, emotionally, sexually."
PATIENT: "That would be MY bad boy! He was ferociously independent. A real animal. He was so much fun!"
THERAPIST: "Why did you and he part ways?"
PATIENT: "Another gal 6 years younger than me seduced him. What a bitch!"
THERAPIST: "How did you respond?"
PATIENT: "I told him that I was on the pill and made sure he came in me a lot. I was gonna get pregnant and rope him in.
THERAPIST: "It didn't work. Did it?"
PATIENT: "Nope. Don't I deserve my prince charming? If it didn't work out. I at least I could get some stuff in a divorce."
THERAPIST: "Look in the mirror. You are self involved, self entitled, self righteous, and self-absorbed. WOULD YOU WANT YOU?
PATIENT: "You're supposed to help me. You are not helping me. Help is what I'm entitled to since that's what I'm paying you for."
THERAPIST: "..... I can't help you. Here's your refund. Go be miserable."
